MINISTRY MATTERS
WITH ROHAN AND JILL BELL
Practical wisdom for pastors, leaders, and the realities of ministry life
Ministry Matters helps pastors and church leaders build healthy, sustainable ministries, especially in small- to medium-sized churches.
Ministry can be deeply meaningful, but it can also be exhausting, complicated, and lonely at times. Many pastors and leaders are trying to lead with limited resources, small teams, and more responsibility than they can realistically carry. Oftentimes, they are simultaneously preaching, leading, caring for people, managing problems, supporting volunteers, balancing family life, governing organisations all while trying to build something healthy and lasting.
Ministry Matters exists to help with that. This is a place for honest conversations, practical wisdom learned from experience, and real-life encouragement for pastors, church leaders, ministry teams, and anyone involved in local church leadership. A lot of church leadership content is designed for or comes from leaders of large churches with large staff teams. However, Ministry Matters aims to focus on the day-to-day realities of ministry, particularly associated with smaller churches.
Small church ministry looks often looks very different. Leaders must wear multiple hats at once. Most pastors are not leading with unlimited time, money, or people. Many of those leading small churches and bi-vocational, and they and their teams are carrying far more than is often recognised. And while there is a lot of content available for church leadership, much of it assumes resources and structures that many leaders simply do not have.
Ministry Matters is different. Through practical conversations, shared experience, and lessons learned over more than 35 years of ministry, Rohan and Jill Bell explore the challenges, opportunities, and realities of leading well over the long haul. The aim is not simply to help leaders survive ministry, but to help them build something healthy, sustainable, and deeply worthwhile.
Along the way, we explore questions such as:
How do we lead well in a small church with limited resources?
What actually works when building teams, culture, and systems?
How do we avoid burnout and remain healthy in ministry?
What should pastors know that no one usually tells them?
How do we balance ministry, marriage, family, and personal life?
How do we lead people well without becoming overwhelmed?
What does sustainable church leadership actually look like?
You will often hear things like:
“Pastors and leaders are rarely told this…”
“Here is what actually works in small churches…”
“If you are feeling overwhelmed in ministry…”
“This may save you years of frustration…”
“You do not need to do everything yourself…”
Ministry Matters is about more than leadership ideas. It’s about helping pastors and leaders build a kind of ministry that is healthy, realistic, and sustainable. It’s about leading with clarity, without carrying unnecessary pressure to fit an unrealistic mould. It’s about learning how to build good teams, healthy culture, wise systems, and strong relationships without creating unnecessary complexity or burning out in the process. It’s about recognising that the leader's health matters too.
Too often, pastors and leaders end up carrying more than they should, sacrificing their own well-being, marriage, family, or long-term sustainability in the process. But a healthy ministry is not built by exhausted people trying to do everything on their own. It is built over time through wise priorities, healthy rhythms, strong support, and learning to lead in a way that lasts.
